The wooden Japanese Puzzle Box is a traditional curiosity which has entertained generations. Unfortunately they are so labour-intensive, and Japanese wages are so high, that they have more or less priced themselves out of Western markets and are rarely seen. We would hardly claim ours to be ‘cheap’, but they come direct from the manufacturer at the lowest price achievable. This version is beautifully finished with the original mosaic design, a covetable thing just on the basis of its appearance. The top, bottom, and both two-section ends must be gently slid in the prescribed sequence and direction nine times before the lid can finally be persuaded to open. Illustrated instructions are provided. It’s something to treasure and marvel at for a lifetime. 11cm long

My father is a sucker for puzzles, crosswords and brain teasers, so his 65th birthday gave me the perfect excuse to buy this box for him. A beautiful puzzle box like this needs a worthy treasure to discover inside, so I had my kids - his grandkids - write personal messages to him on slips of paper. These were folded up, the box sealed and the opening instructions well hidden... I'm not sure how long it took him to open the box. Somewhere between 30 minutes and an hour, with a few hints from the kids. He was delighted when he finally opened the box, and even more delighted when he read the messages the kids had written for him. Truly memorable.

I have an old original one of these boxes, inherited from my father. Unfortunaely it's a little the worse for wear and has had to be glued closed! I never thought I'd find another. They're lovely

I love my japanese box. It's beautifully made. The only problem is, I've lost the instructions on how to get in to it. Can anyone help?
